Shardiya Navratri at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi
Event Overview
Shardiya Navratri is a nine-night spiritual festival dedicated to the worship of the nine manifestations of Goddess Durga. In 2026, the observance begins on 11 October and continues through 19 October, making it suitable as a multi-day pilgrimage festival.
During Navratri, Katra and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan receive a large number of pilgrims undertaking the sacred journey through the Trikuta Hills. The Bhawan, Atka area and sections of the pilgrimage route are traditionally decorated with flowers and devotional installations during the nine-day celebration.
Pilgrim activities generally include:
Yatra from Katra to the Holy Bhawan
Darshan of the sacred Pindies
Morning and evening Attka Aarti
Havan and poojan in the Yagyashala
Fasting and daily worship of the nine forms of the Goddess
Chanting of Durga mantras and devotional bhajans
Offering red chunri, flowers and prasad
Darshan at Bhairon Ji Temple after visiting the Holy Cave
The Shrine Board states that Attka Aarti is performed twice daily—once in the morning and once in the evening—in front of the Holy Cave. Havan and poojan are also performed in the Yagyashala with Vedic mantras. Pilgrims must complete Yatra registration and obtain an RFID-based access card before proceeding from Katra.
Sharad-Ashwin Navratri is a peak pilgrimage period at Vaishno Devi. The Shrine Board advises pilgrims to prepare for heavy crowds and potentially long waiting periods during festival days. Accommodation, transport and official services should therefore be reserved in advance.
Cultural & Spiritual Significance
Shardiya Navratri celebrates the Divine Mother as the source of courage, wisdom, prosperity and spiritual transformation. Each day is associated with a different form of Navadurga, encouraging devotees to practise prayer, fasting, discipline, charity and self-reflection.
At the Holy Cave, Mata Vaishno Devi is worshipped through three natural rock formations known as the sacred Pindies. The Shrine Board identifies these manifestations with Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati, representing divine strength, abundance and knowledge.
The pilgrimage symbolises a devotee’s movement from worldly distraction towards spiritual surrender. Walking from Katra through Banganga, Charan Paduka and Adhkuwari before reaching the Bhawan is understood as both a physical journey and an inner act of devotion.
Navratri at Vaishno Devi is particularly important because it unites pilgrims from different regions through collective worship, seva and faith in the Divine Mother. Devotees commonly pray for family welfare, health, courage, prosperity and fulfilment of sincere wishes.
The festival concludes with worship associated with Maha Navami, after nine days of devotion to the Goddess. Vijayadashami follows on 20 October 2026, marking the broader spiritual theme of righteousness and divine power overcoming negativity.
